If you are trying to setup a security automation system for your home, one of the things you must consider is whether or not your cameras and doorbell are compatible with a smart assistant.
Like most homes, if your home security is dependent on Google services, you need to be equipped with security cameras that are compatible with Google products.
Blink security cameras have gained much praise for their quality devices. But do they work with Google services like Google Home and Google Assistant? If so, then how? If not then what to do?
That’s what we’re going to answer in this article.
Let’s get started!
Does Blink Doorbell Support Google Home Natively?
Blink cameras and doorbells don’t have any native support for Google Home or other Google services currently. And this is to be expected.
Blink is an Amazon company. They have built-in support for devices that support Alexa, Amazon’s Smart Assistant. Google Home on the other hand is, well, a Google product.
It’s a part of Amazon’s business plan to bring its consumers inside the Amazon ecosystem. So if someone buys a Blink camera, he will need to buy other Amazon gadgets because they have Alexa inside. This will let the consumer integrate them seamlessly.
If Blink devices worked with Google devices natively, people wouldn’t consider buying Alexa-enabled products. They can just buy Blink cameras and integrate them with Google devices.
But does that mean there is no way you can integrate Blink Doorbell with Google Home? Well, actually there is. It does require you to use third-party applications. But it’s doable.
Let us show you how.
Connecting Blink Doorbell with Google Home
The best way and perhaps the only way to connect your Blink Doorbell with Google products is through IFTTT.
If This Then That or IFTTT is a system to integrate your electronic devices and services. It makes home automation straightforward.
With IFTTT, you can connect your Blink doorbell to Google Home. But first, you need to connect your Blink account with IFTTT. Here are the necessary steps:
So you now have your Blink doorbell connected to IFTTT. How IFTTT works is that you can use pre-made or custom-made applets to set commands to control your smart devices automatically.
Some applets include Google Home. You can make some applets yourself to suit your needs.
So the next step is to connect your Google Home to IFTTT. To do so:
Now you have both your Blink Doorbell and Google Home connected to IFTTT. The last thing to do is create applets to connect Google Home with Blink. For that, you need to:
SmartThings: Make Your Blink Doorbell Automation Even Smoother
With IFTTT, you can integrate your Blink device and Google Home. But you have limited control over how much automation you can perform. SmartThings uplifts that limitation to some extent and allows you to create powerful workflows.
Some of the things you can do with SmartThings are:
Blink Alternatives That Are Google Home Compatible
If you haven’t bought Blink doorbell yet and still considering a device that supports Google services, this list can be of great help to you.
Brands that have Google-supported devices include:
1. Google
Not a surprise, right? The Google nest series cameras such as Nest Doorbell (battery), Nest Cam (Indoor, Wired), Nest Cam Battery, and Nest Cam with Floodlight, all support Google Home and Assistant.
If you have already invested in the Google ecosystem, why not go for a Google cam as well?
2. Wyze
This is a budget-friendly option that offers a range of indoor and outdoor security camera doorbells.
Wyze Cam v3, Wyze Cam Pan v2, and Wyze Cam Outdoor support Google Home. Pan v2 has advanced motion tracking which adds to its credibility as a smart home camera option. You can read Wyze Doorbell’s common issues and solutions.
3. Arlo
Arlo Ultra 2 Spotlight, Arlo Pro 4 Spotlight, Arlo Essential Indoor, and Arlo Essential Spotlight are some decent choices for your smart home. Other than Ultra 2 Spotlight, the other models don’t even require a smart hub, saving you some budget.
4. Eufy
Eufy Solo IndoorCam C24 and Eufy Solo IndoorCam P24 are highly affordable devices that are compatible with Google’s smart home system.
5. Ring
The king of smart doorbells, you may argue. Although another Amazon company, Ring devices can be integrated with Google Home.
Remember that in order to use some of these cameras with Google Home, you will need to have a compatible smart home hub, such as Google Nest Hub, or a device with Google Assistant built-in, such as a Google Home speaker.
You will also need to set up the camera with the Google Home app and link it to your Google account.
Is It Worth Connecting Blink Doorbell with Google Home?
So after going through this process, you might be wondering if it is even worth integrating your Blink devices with Google Home. Our answer is no.
While you can achieve somewhat success using IFTTT, that’s still a third-party service. You don’t get the full freedom to control and automate your home as you would have for native support.
Therefore, I don’t recommend you this method unless you already have all the devices at home and don’t want to spend on new things.
If you’re still in the consideration stage, you have two options. Either you buy a camera doorbell that has native support for Google Home. Or if you want to stick to Blink, go for Alexa smart system instead of Google.
Both these solutions are better than having third-party apps acting as a middleman in a security system.
